NYWS developed very exciting plans to build a brand new, $12 million multi-use building that will have a new residence to provide emergency shelter to more women and children, and a separate space where staff can provide community services and training to women and children in need.
Women and children require places of healing, empowerment and refuge to escape violent domestic situations. The new NYWS building (the first of its kind in Canada!) has been designed to provide women and children an accessible, safe, secure, trauma-informed, evidence-based space to heal.
The new NYWS complex will be a secure, fully accessible 24,000 square foot building with two distinct spaces:
An emergency residence with the capacity to house up to 40 women and their children, plus - a first in Toronto - their pets!
A drop-in and service hub offering violence-prevention programming to support women and children in the community.
Construction of the new building will be completed in late 2019. Meanwhile, NYWS continues to run programs out of the head office location and through the support of partner agencies.
