From 1773 onward, hundreds of ships carried thousands of Scottish immigrants to Pictou Harbour. Reverend Thomas McCulloch arrived in 1803 and soon became an influential figure in the lives of Nova Scotians.
A significant figure in the history of Nova Scotia and Canada, McCulloch believed education should be available to all and helped lay the foundation for Nova Scotia’s first public school.
McCulloch was also an enthusiastic naturalist who often involved his children in collecting and describing specimens. These collections would be used to educate others. The museum proudly displays examples of this early work in natural history.
Visit this 200-year-old brick home, where McCulloch and his wife, Isabella, raised their family, and discover how his vision helped shape public education in Nova Scotia.
