Our Mission

Pimachiowin Aki is a non-profit charitable organization with a mandate to protect, preserve and present the Outstanding Universal Value of a 29,040 square kilometre World Heritage Site in eastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario.

About Pimachiowin Aki

Pimachiowin Aki (pronounced pim-MATCH-o-win a-KEH) means "the land that gives life", and "living a good life on the land".  This is Canada's first and only mixed World Heritage site, recognized for both its natural and cultural values, and is rare in the world: less than 1% of all World Heritage sites are in the same category as Pimachiowin Aki.  We are a partnership of four Anishinaabe First Nations (Bloodvein River, Little Grand Rapids, Pauingassi, and Poplar River), and the governments of Manitoba and Ontario.  Inscription of Pimachiowin Aki on the World Heritage List is the result of a 16-year campaign led by Anishinaabe First Nations to protect ancestral lands and way of life in one of the world's most important primary boreal forests.  Guided by the principles of Ji-ganawendamang Gidakiiminaan ("keeping the land"), the partnership continues to safeguard the environment for its own sake and for the benefit of all humanity in perpetuity.
