We are a charitable organization that runs an aquatic walking program for adults who have been diagnosed with a brain tumour. The program is staffed exclusively by volunteers, many of whom are health care professionals.
Our Mission
To promote health by offering a pool rehabilitation program to individuals diagnosed with brain tumours
Our Story
Pool Brats was established in 2023 by a small group of women passionate about health and wellness for people with brain tumours. Jim Power was diagnosed with a brain tumor (glioblastoma) in 2014. He credits participating in rehabilitation, and especially aquatic walking therapy, to maintaining function and quality of life.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 resulted in the closure of accessible aquatic facilities and programs. With limited rehabilitation options, and accessible aquatic programs no longer available, Jim’s daughters Kathryn and Kristyn decided to create a program for people like their father. With the help of many, they formed a non-profit aquatic walking program for people with BRAin TumorS, or Pool BraTs.
Our aim is to keep our fees as low as possible to ensure the accessibility for all. Our main expenses are insurance (approx $4000) and pool rental ($1000/month). All of our staff are volunteer. Our fees go exclusively to the operations of the program.
