Salty Science - Rowing across an ocean for the oceans

The four women of Salty Science are a multigenerational team of marine scientists connected through years of shared research, mentorship, and education, and a common penchant for pushing our limits. We have committed our lives to understanding the threats facing our ocean. We now want to make a difference by raising money for three amazing organisations that are supporting the sustainable use and protection of our ocean through education. One of these organisations is the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC).

The least young (!) of us (Isabelle) first discovered BMSC as an MSc student who helped teach a field course on the behaviour of marine organisms. She returned 22 years later to teach the very same course (this time as main instructor), and has since taught there every summer while running a large research program on marine invasive species at BMSC. Bamfield is a place that allows young people to discover and nurture a life-changing love for all things marine. This is why the Salty Science crew wants to raise funds to allow budding marine biologists from less privileged backgrounds to experience the magic of BMSC.

How far are we willing to go to get your support for this initiative? Very far! In December 2023, the women of the Salty Science team will tackle its biggest challenge yet – rowing 4800 km (3000 miles) unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean!

UPDATE - JANUARY 2024

On 20 January 2024, the Salty Science crew on their trusted rowboat Emma crossed the finish line in English Harbour, Antigua, winning the Women's class of the World's Toughest Race in 38 days, 18 hours and 56 minutes!! Thank you to all who have supported us so far. We will continue to raise money for the BMSC Salty Science Scholarship until we reach our fundraising goal.
