Get Students Into Nature With Nature School

In 2025, Nature Nova Scotia piloted our first in-school and field trip-based nature education program, Nature School. After celebrating its massive success in uptake, impact, and feedback, we've decided to make it a core project. But we need your help!

Over the course of the 2025–2026 pilot, Nature School:

  • Delivered 7 programs at 5 designated, pending, or community-nominated protected areas across Nova Scotia.
  • Engaged 158 P-6 students in curriculum-aligned natural history lessons in protected areas and classrooms.
  • Created 2 lesson plans and educational resources, including Bird Form & Function, Bird Habitats & Populations, the Big Bird Activity Book, and additional classroom activities.

Students practiced bird identification skills, played games exploring food webs and bird anatomy, modeled population declines for species at risk, and learned about protected areas planning and management while exploring local wildernesses alongside Nature Nova Scotia staff and partners.

Nature School takes P–6 students in Nova Scotia to designated, pending, or community-nominated protected areas and engages them in curriculum-aligned activities focused on birds, forests, and wetland conservation. Classes enjoy hands-on programming and educational take-homes, while teachers benefit from classroom resources they can continue using long after the program ends. Students engage with biologists and other subject experts from Nature Nova Scotia and our partners and get to experience wilderness they might not otherwise have access to.

Help us reach our goal of engaging at least 20 P-6 classes in 2026-2027 by donating to our Education Fund today!
