Put Nature First: A Culture Change Initiative For Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia stands at a turning point. Decades of resource extraction have strained our forests, waters, and communities, revealing the limits of old conventional approaches. A thriving future requires a cultural shift - recognizing that a healthy biosphere / nature underpins our prosperity. Together, Nova Scotians can restore nature and build an economy and society that flourish in balance with the land creating benefits for humans and all our relations.

Nova Scotia needs committed Nature Champions to help shift not only what we do, but how we think, feel, and relate to the natural world. At a time of accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing disconnection from the land, local leadership grounded in care, knowledge, and action is essential. Nature Champions become catalysts - bridging science, community, and lived experience - so that stewardship becomes a shared joy and responsibility across Nova Scotia.

This work comes to life across five key areas:

1. Deepening Connection

Helping people build a personal, emotional, and cultural relationship with nature.

2. Mobilizing Action

Turning concern into practical stewardship, restoration, and advocacy;

3. Strengthening Community

Bringing people together across generations, sectors, and perspectives to care for shared landscapes;

4. Sharing Knowledge and Stories

Amplifying local voices, Indigenous wisdom, and success stories to inspire learning and momentum; and

5. Influencing Systems

Helping shape policies, practices, and norms so that ecological thinking becomes embedded in how decisions are made.

Nature Champions are not just participants - they are stewards of a broader cultural shift. By empowering individuals within families, organizations, industries and across communities, champions can help grow a movement where caring for nature comes first as a way of life - sustained, shared, and deeply rooted in place.

Nature Nova Scotia set out to start this cultural shift in 2026 and has engaged a committee of nature lovers to find and mobilize more champions from across the province. We hope you can join us!

We need your help to continue identifying and engaging Nature Champions who can amplify our message and maximize our impact. Help us with this massive strategic undertaking by donating to our Put Nature First fund or joining our culture change committee.
