The Gabriola Island Memorial Society (GIMS) is a community based non-profit society dedicated to establishing and operating a natural burial site on Gabriola Island for the use of residents and former residents of Gabriola, Mudge and Decourcy Islands as well as members of their families and members of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. We also work to advance education and understanding of green burial in the community and holistic death care practices, including support with end of life planning.
For almost 150 years many Gabriola residents have chosen the Gabriola Community Cemetery for their final place of rest, close to family and friends. Not suprisingly, the Community Cemetery is nearing capacity and a new burial site on Gabriola must be found to meet the wishes of current and future residents who want to be memorialized here. GIMS is working to acquire land and develop a memorial park that honours the deceased while preserving the environment. We imagine a place of beauty and peace, welcoming all cultures and faiths, with space to gather in sacred remembrance of loved ones.
The Gabriola Island Memorial Society is run by a small group of community volunteers. We welcome and are grateful for every new membership and donation in support of the work we do. These contributions are vital in helping us cover basic expenses, host community education events and offer new programs to support end-of-life care planning. We deeply appreciate the ongoing support we receive from residents and visitors alike, recognizing that your generosity is essential to establishing a beautiful new earth-friendly memorial park on Gabriola Island
