THE MONTREAL WEST OPERATIC SOCIETY INC

about

The Montreal West Operatic Society, founded in 1939, became a charitable organization in 1985.  It was the first Gilbert & Sullivan Society in Canada. MWOS is dedicated to producing the works of comic musical theatre works - especially Gilbert and Sullivan's pieces - primarily, in and around the Montreal area. MWOS donates funds each year to the Montreal Children's Hospital our charity for more than 40 years.

Our Mandate

The Montreal West Operatic Society (M.W.O.S) is a non-profit, community-based arts organization. It seeks to entertain audiences of all ages through the professional quality presentation of works of a musical and theatrical nature. It is a training ground for performers and support personnel alike. It builds programmes and performances which provide educational opportunities and entertainment for the community at large. MWOS will support local charities through its earned proceeds and will develop partnerships within the larger community.

Our Vision

The Montreal West Operatic Society sees the future of this organization based on education and dissemination of music - both sung and performed, as a means of community involvement.  Its history and experience lend themselves well to encourage community commitment in maintaining audience appreciation of our interpretations of musical works - be they classical or contemporary, and to involve the public in the development of productions or performances of professional quality.  MWOS will support other non-profit, community-based organizations to encourage collaboration and development of creative works while ensuring the stability of the art form and MWOS itself.

Our Mission

The Montreal West Operatic Society (MWOS) will encourage community involvement by creating opportunities for those interested in the arts to join MWOS and participate in the development of productions or presentations primarily focused on classically-sung repertoire.  Productions will be presented in a professional context and will focus on the participants developing their talent and ability to perform in public.  Most productions or presentations will be done publicly, with proceeds donated to a charity of MWOS's choosing.  The organization offers opportunities for students of music - both singers and instrumentalists - to develop their talents further while performing in public.  It also offers opportunities for trainees in design and technical applications to hone their skills in the creative development of these productions and presentations.
