To promote the conservation of migratory species through innovative research, education and partnership.
About Our Charity
Established in 1994, Operation Migration (OM) is a North American non-profit organization, which uses ultralight aircraft, along with costume-rearing and puppets to impart new and safe migratory routes. To date, OM has conducted migration studies involving Canada geese, Trumpeter swans, Sandhill cranes and Whooping cranes. OM was co-founded by Bill Lishman and Joe Duff and has its base of operations in Ontario, Canada.
Since 2001, three generations of Whooping cranes have followed OM ultralights on a new eastern migration path from Wisconsin to Florida. After having been shown the route once, the still juvenile cranes are able to return, unassisted to the northern reintroduction site in central Wisconsin the next spring. After only 4 years the new eastern N.A. population stands at 46 - after an absence of more than a Century!
The team will train a new generation of endangered cranes each year until a core group is returned to eastern N. America.
