For over 30 years, Uzume Taiko Drum Group has created a new West Coast Canadian style of taiko music involving collaborations with artists from diverse cultures, instrumentation, genres and disciplines. Drawing its inspiration from the festival drumming of pre-industrial Japan, the group has developed a unique presentation that combines traditional and contemporary rhythms and strong melodies with exciting movement and theatre. People have been moved by the harmony of Uzume Taiko performances that are accessible to all and celebrate the rhythm of life. Since 1989, the Society has been at the forefront of cross-cultural performances and the creation of uniquely Canadian works and expression.
Uzume Taiko drummers are recognized as specialists in their field and are engaged as mentors and educators in the art form of Taiko Drumming. Uzume Taiko has educated audiences about taiko music in all regions of B.C. reaching thousands of elementary, secondary, college and university students.
