The Giving Report 2022
Giving at a Crossroads:
Generational Trends, Pandemic Uncertainties,
and Unprecedented Strain on Charities
The fifth edition of The Giving Report 2022 highlights insights, trends, and challenges that Canadian charities are currently facing. There is a steady decline in the number of Canadians that donate to charities, and an increased reliance on a smaller group of ageing donors to give. Meanwhile, over the last two years, charities saw a decline in overall giving due to pressures of the pandemic and now this is expected to worsen due to the troubling rise in inflation. This is all happening while many charities have faced a drastic rise in demand that they are struggling to keep up with.
Fortunately, Canadians continue to give even as overall giving declines. This year’s report is a snapshot that highlights the challenges and opportunities facing the sector and how new trends are changing the charitable landscape.

Charities Are Facing a Number of Serious Challenges
Total giving in 2019 to 2021 is projected to have dropped -12% due to the pandemic, inflation, and other challenges. At the same time, a growing number of Canadians are expecting to turn to charities for assistance this year.
