There are over 86,000 registered charities in Canada.1

Fact 2

Charities are vital to the Canadian economy, with $251-billion in annual revenue.1

Fact 3

The charity sector employs over 1.7 million people on a full-time basis representing 12% of the Canadian workforce.1,2

Fact 4

The majority of Canada's charities are small. 91% have 10 or fewer paid full-time staff and of these 63% are completely volunteer-run.1

Fact 5

80% of charities in Canada are small with total annual revenue of less than $500,000.1

Fact 6

67% of charitable revenue is from government funding. 89% of government funding goes to charities in the education and health categories.1

86% of government funding goes to charities with more than 200 full-time staff and just 4% goes to the 91% of charities with 10 or fewer full-time employees.1

Fact 8

Receipted gifts (those made by individuals and corporations entitled to a receipt) represent just 7% of total charitable revenue.1

Fact 9

Small charities rely more on donations from individuals. The average small charity with 10 or fewer full-time employees gets 35% of its revenue from individuals and corporations. Charities with more than 10 staff get just 3% of their donations from individuals and corporations.1

Fact 10

Just 8% of charitable expenditures are for management & administration and just 1% goes to fundraising.1

The data source is Statistics Canada, CONSUMER PRICE INDEXES FOR CANADA, MONTHLY (V41690973 series.) CAGR is used in the accompanying tables and refers to Compound Annual Growth Rate.
