How You Can Participate in Random Acts of Kindness Day

Posted on

February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day; a day to recognize, celebrate, and encourage kind acts across the globe. It’s no secret that the last two years have been particularly challenging for Canadians, so why not celebrate a day that encourages good deeds to lift the spirits of those around us? Plus, did you know that performing kind acts for others has also been linked to increased feelings of happiness and positivity, and can even encourage those who witness kind acts to repeat what they see? With that in mind, let’s inspire kindness and promote altruism in our communities today and everyday.

10 ways to perform kind acts today and everyday

1. SUPPORT A FUNDRAISER

Why not try to support a stranger’s fundraiser? Hundreds of Canadians have launched fundraisers on CanadaHelps.org and could use your help reaching their goals. Explore fundraisers for causes related to animal welfare, climate change, homelessness, and more.

2. HELP YOUR NEIGHBOURS

Winter can be a difficult time of year so give your neighbours a helping hand. Shovel someone’s driveway, buy groceries for a senior, or start a snowball fight with local kids. You can help those near you feel like they’re less alone.

3. REACH OUT TO A LOVED ONE

Whether it’s through text, email, or a phone call, this is a great day to check in on someone you care about, especially if you’ve been out of touch. Let that person know you’re thinking of them. Ask how they’re doing, share a funny story or meme, or recall a fond memory you share together.

4. GIVE THE GIFT OF GIVING

Surprise someone special with a Charitable Gift Card. This is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation. Your loved one chooses the charity or cause that matters most to them, giving them the chance to share a little kindness. There are few things more kind than a gift that pays it forward!

5. DROP OFF DONATIONS

Start your spring cleaning a little early this year to find items you can donate. Browse through your closets, kitchen, and pantry for things you no longer need. Then drop off food, clothing, and other necessities to your local shelter, food bank, or charity shop in your neighbourhood.

6. SEND AN ECARD

Pay tribute to someone who has made a positive impact on you by making a donation in their name to their favourite charity or cause with a CanadaHelps eCard. Share your gratitude in a message to the recipient and let them know why you’re honouring them. You could even turn the giving into a game of tag where you encourage your recipient to choose their own honouree for to send the next eCard to.

7. SET UP A MONTHLY DONATION

Set up a monthly donation to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day and turn your random act into a planned act of kindness for the rest of the year. Instead of worrying about fundraising, help charities focus on what they do best, making an impact for those who need it most.

8. BECOME A VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER

There are thousands of virtual volunteer opportunities available across the country where you can make a meaningful contribution without risk. Sign up to become a volunteer on Random Act of Kindness Day and make an even greater difference throughout the rest of the year. There are organizations looking for online volunteers to do research, provide administrative support, man crisis lines, and more.

9. SAY THANK YOU

Don’t let good work go unrecognized today! Whether it’s a colleague, barista, mail carrier, or a loved one, today is the perfect chance to tell someone they’re doing a great job. Show your appreciation with an extra thank you and tell them how much you value them.

We need to get this message out there ! I did not know that Feb 17 was Kindness Day. I try to practice Kindness every day if possible, although a special day is a great way to spread the word !

We are going to Mexico today and I purchased a big bag of school supplies to take to the school on Isla Mujeres. I also did this a number of years ago.
